Catheters are medical devices designed to drain or administer fluids from the body. The general form of a catheter is a thin tube that can be inserted into the body during medical treatments, surgery, or for daily health maintenance. Catheters are used in a wide range of applications including urological, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, ophthalmic and neurovascular.
Urinary catheters are flexible tubes that help remove liquid waste from the body. The most common types of urinary catheters include: indwelling catheters, which feature a tiny balloon that holds the catheter in place inside a patient’s bladder; intermittent catheters, also known as short-term catheters, which are used several times a day to empty urine through the urethra; and external or condom catheters, which feature a sheath covers the penis to remove urine. Indwelling catheters inserted through the urethra are known as Foley catheters. Suprapubic catheters are indwelling catheters inserted through a hole in the abdomen.
Intravenous catheters, or IV catheters, deliver medications, fluids and nutrients into a patient’s bloodstream. The two main types are peripheral venous catheters, for short term insertion into veins, and central venous catheters, for long term insertion into large veins above the heart.
