Syringes are devices consisting of a cylindrical tube fitted with a plunger used to push out or take in a fluid from the open end of the tube. Needles are hollow stainless steel tubes that fit on the end of syringes and feature a beveled tip to create the opening in the skin of a person to allow the fluid to pass through it. Medical syringes are commonly used to administer an injection, infuse intravenous therapy, and draw liquids.
There are five common types of syringes. The most popular type of syringe is the Luer lock syringe, which has a threaded tip that allows needles to be screwed onto the syringe securely. Normal slip tip syringes, also known as Luer slip syringes, allow the needle to be pushed onto the tip and held in place with friction. Eccentric tip syringes are used to administer an injection parallel to the skin of the patient. Catheter tip syringes have a longer and tapered slip tip design for injections through a tube, or for wound irrigation. The last type is the syringe with a permanently attached needle, used for single-use, low-dose applications. A common type of these are insulin syringes.
Needles are defined by their gauge, length and use. Diameters, measured in gauges, can range from the largest 7 gauge needles to the narrowest 32 gauge needles. 18 gauge needles are commonly used for administering IV fluids and blood. Length typically range from ⅜” needles to 3″ needles. The different types of needle use is based on how deep the needle needs to be inserted for the injection. Common types include hypodermic needles, used to inject fluids and take liquid samples; dialysis fistula needles, for use with dialysis machines; huber needles, to access ports implanted in the skin of a patient; and spinal needles, for administering spinal anesthesia.
